![]() ![]() Lowry's reason for leaving was simple: "burnout." In 2009, he, Michael English and David Phelps all opted to return to the Gaither Vocal Band. Lowry performed with the Gaithers for 13 years, from 1988 to 2001. I'm not a musical genius like Michael English. I did not get a music degree from Baylor, like David Phelps. I never sang baritone until Bill convinced me I could. "Talk about starting at the top," he added. Reflecting, Lowry said he never could have succeeded without Gaither's encouragement. "But Bill said, 'I've always done many things.' Naturally, I thought, "If he can, I can, too." It was always my dream to record for Word. He was 30 when first recruited by Gaither, and recalled, "I had just signed a recording contract with Word, the Christian label that signed Sandy Patti and Amy Grant. (Trivia: Mention the effect that "Mary, Did You Know" has on listeners, and Lowry compares it to how a Christmas song by The Isaacs, "A Labor of Love," makes him weep every time he hears it.)įor a while, there also was no guarantee that Lowry, 53, would still be touring with Gaither. 'Mary, Did You Know?' is not only my favorite Christmas song, but one of my all-time favorites any time of the year." He's funny, but that man can truly sing, too. Rhonda Oates wrote on Facebook, "I love Mark Lowry. Then, again, the video of Lowry singing the song on YouTube continues to collect hits all year, every year. There is no guarantee Lowry will sing the song at Thursday's Gaither Homecoming Concert at City Bank Auditorium. Lowry noted that many composers dream of having one of their songs "enter into the Christmas system, like a 'Sleighbells' or a 'White Christmas.'" Radio releases were recorded by Clay Aiken, Natalie Cole, David Phelps and New Zealand's Hayley Westenra, to name just a few. The first was Michael English, but there were also duets by Kathleen Battle and Christopher Parkening, and Wynonna Judd and Kenny Rogers. Buddy turned it into a song."īill and Gloria Gaither told Lowry that, of their many compositions, none have equaled the success of "Mary, Did You Know?" Dozens of artists have recorded it. He called Lowry and sang it over the telephone. Greene took only until the following Monday to finish the song. He asked Greene if he would put music to the words. Mansion Over The Hilltop – feat. The lyrics became a project Lowry brought back out of a drawer and worked on for years, until one Friday when he was on a tour bus and told songwriter Buddy Greene he had written some "questions for Mary.". ![]() Candy Hemphill Christmas, Wesley Pritchard, Terry Blackwood, & Vestal Goodman
